There is a grouping of isomers in Hydrocarbons, namely:

1. Structure isomer consisting of skeletal isomers, position isomers, and function isomers2. Stereoisomers consisting of geometric isomers and optical isomers

Geometric isomers occur because of differences in the direction of the groups in the molecule

Geometrical isomers are found in compounds that have double bonds such as alkenes and the two C atoms bind 2 different groups, so that if the location of the groups are exchanged the shape becomes different

If a similar group is located on the same side of the double bond it is called -cis, but if the group is opposite it is called -trans

Example:

Atomicity to 2 butenes. Where in cis-2 butene, both methyl groups are located on the same side whereas, in trans-2 butene, both methyl groups are opposite
