Functionalist perspectives is also known as functionalism, it basically one of the important theoretical perspectives in sociology.

The functionalist perspectives depend solely on the works of Emile Durkheim, who took interest in how a society can be relatively stable.

According to functionalist perspectives, society refers to systems that is interconnected and work together in harmony to achieve and maintain a state of balance and social equilibrium for all.  

For example, all social institutions in the society play an important role:  Economics provides a context for population, distribution and consumption of goods and services to the society, Family as social instructions provides a context for grooming, reproducing, and socializing children, politics provides means of ruling the members of the society, education provides a means of transmitting knowledge, culture and skills to its youth: and religion offers spiritual guidance and means for people to worship.  

Functional perspectives pointed out the relationship that exists in society by focusing on how each part benefit and influences each other. The word functional” and “dysfunctional” are used by functionalist to described the effect that social element has on the society.

Elements of society are said to be functional if they impact the society positively or they contribute to social stability. They are said to be dysfunctional if they negatively impact the society or if they disrupt social stability. Crime that leads to physical violence, loss of property in a society is dysfunctional.
