Groundwater depletion is also known as "overdrafting" which is the process of extracting groundwater beyond the equilibrium yield of the aquifer. In such a way, two high-impact factors have been identified and are listed below:

- Reduction of water in streams and lakes: in this case, groundwater pumping can modify the way water moves between an aquifer and a watered system by intercepting groundwater flow that discharges into the surface-water body under natural conditions. On the other hand, this is attained by increasing the rate of water movement from the surface of the watered body into an aquifer.

- Deterioration of the water quality: one threat that the water-quality suffers is by cause of the salty water intrusion, since all of the water in the ground is not fresh water because of the saline media provided from the ocean.
