Before taking the plunge into videoconferencing, a company ran tests of its current internal computer network. the goal of the tests was to measure how rapidly data moved through the network given the current demand on the network. eighty files ranging in size from 20 to 100 megabytes (mb) were transmitted over the network a various times of day, and the time to send the file (in seconds) was recorded.

1. create a scatterplot of transfer time on file size. does a line seem to be a good summary of the association between the variables?

2. estimate the least squares linear equation for predicting transfer time.

3. interpret the fitted slope and intercept. be sure to include their units.

4. what is the value of the standard error? be sure to include the units.

5. plot the residuals from the regression. does this plot show a pattern? if so, what type of pattern?

6. the goal is to get data transferred in no more than 15 seconds. how much of the data do you think can be transferred in this length of time? how did you estimate this?
