You are going to supervise the finances for a family trip. There are four people in the family: two parents, a college student and a high school student. The parents will share one hotel room and the students will share another hotel room during the trip. The trip will last three weeks and will start and end in the GTA some place between Oshawa and Hamilton. The family must return to the place where they started. The trip will last three weeks (21 days). The family will drive on days when they travel. They will stay in hotels or motels or bed and breakfast houses at night. The trip will travel in something like a circle, never visiting the same place twice. The family will travel only in Canada, they will not cross the border into the United States.
You will submit a report which will include costs for the following items:
• Car
• Hotel, motel, bed, and breakfast
• Food
• Souvenirs and gifts
• Activities (entrance fees for attractions, etc.)
• Other personal items
The report will also contain details of the trip including:
• Starting / ending point
• Stopping point for each day
• Distance travelled each day
• Name of hotel or motel or bed and breakfast
• Names of activities
• Any other details that will help me understand the progress of the trip.
You can record the financial information at the end of the report or with each day. If you choose to record the financial information daily, then put the totals for each item after the daily details. (3 points)
Using the financial information from the trip show the following calculations. Include both the method used and the final value. (1 point)
• Average total daily cost (0.5 point)
• Average daily cost for hotels, motels, and bed and breakfast (0.5 point)
• Average cost of meals per day per person (1 point)
• Identify which family member spent the most on souvenirs, gifts, activities, and other personal items. How much did they spend? (0.5 points)
• Identify which family member spent the least on souvenirs, gifts, activities, and other personal items. How much did they spend? (0.5 points)
• Develop an equation which predicts the total cost of such a trip. The x-value will be
the number of days travelling and the y-value will be the total cost. (3 points)
