You have just been hired as the IT Lead for a startup company. Of course, when anyone hears IT, they think all things technology and have tasked you with designing and standing up the local network. The first thing you have to do is decide how to segment the network. You have been given some key information regarding the size of each department. The finance department has 7 people, the HR department has 13 people, there are approximately 31 people working in various technology roles, i. e. programmers and coders, telecommunications professionals, and system engineers. There are 5 in leadership roles, and lastly you have to account for the 10 personnel who work in the department of facilities management. Remember, you have to account for the two additional addresses, meaning your available host addresses equal your host addresses minus 2. Each department should be configured for its own VLAN. Example Finance will be "Finance VLAN" with the networks written immediately following. Example - Finance VLAN = 192.168.1.xxx / xx
Given the network address 192.168.1.0 / 24 please segment the traffic in a way that is efficient and also allows for further expansion. Plan on a 15% increase in personnel over the next year. There are various ways you can segment the traffic, just make sure to account for expansion. Please begin by calculating the largest departments first then continuing from there. In other words, begin with the Technology VLAN. This of course is strictly hypothetical and is only designed to familiarize you with how networks can be subnetted. Good luck everyone!
