There are two type of storage. One retains all the data while powered but loses all data when unpowered, and the other retains data even when unpowered. An example of a temporary storage device is RAM. Some more permanent storage device includes Hard Disk Drives (HDD), Solid State Drives (SSD), CDs, and flash drives (also known as thumb drives). Not only do different storage devices store data for different amounts of time, they are also classified into three categories: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary storage is any storage directly attached to the memory bus. Secondary storage is any storage device that is not directly attached to the memory bus but still inside the computer. Tertiary storage is any storage device on the outside of the computer.
