Explain the saying "dress for the position you want, not the position you have."

i wanna see if this is right:

a sous chef is being forced to stay in the same position, instead of dressing as a sous chef he dresses like a chef. dress for what you want to be, not what they force you to be.

(this is for my computers and buisness class)

In this saying, dress is used as meaning working harder than you’ve already worked and implementing new set of ideals. Then, when you dress for the position you have, then you are content and with no willing of going further. If there is a position you want but do not have, you should make an effort to dress for it and reach it.
