Alight mild steel shaft of diameter 20mm is supported on self-aligning bearings to give an effective shaft length of 1.2m. the shaft supports a rotor of mass 27kg. initially it is suggested that the shaft is operated at 385 r. p.m. (i) determine the suitability of the suggested operating speed, assuming that young's modulus of elasticity is 200 gn/m2 (ii)-if the rotor's centre of gravity is positioned off the shaft axis by 0.39mm, determine the deflection of the shaft at speeds greater than 10% above the whirling speed. (iii)- explain, with a suitable graph how the shaft deflection due to whirling will behave at speeds above the whirling speed.

Refrigerant 134a enters an insulated compressor operating at steady state as saturated vapor at -26°c with a volumetric flow rate of 0.18 m3/s. refrigerant exits at 9 bar, 70°c. changes in kinetic and potential energy from inlet to exit can be ignored. determine the volumetric flow rate at the exit, in m3/s, and the compressor power, in kw.
