A gear pump has the following dimensions:

Addendum radius = 50 mm
Dedendum radius = 35 mm
Width = 25 mm
a) What is its displacement Dp? Use Dp=0.5x(width)x((add. radius)2 -(deden. radius)2 )
b) Tests show that the pump’s volumetric efficiency and mechanical efficiency are 80% and 90% respectively when turning at 1000 rpm and deliver oil at 100 bar. Determine the delivered flow rate and the leakage flow rate under these conditions.
c) Assuming that leakage is proportional to pressure and that mechanical losses are proportional to the angular velocity of the pump, determine the volumetric efficiency, mechanical efficiency and power required to drive the pump at 1500 rpm while developing 140 bar.

Amixture of slurry and mud is to be pumped through a horizontal pipe of diameter 500 mm. the fluid behaves as a bingham plastic with a yield stress of 30 pa and viscosity 0.04 pa.s. describe the effects of the shear stress through a transverse section of the pipe by plotting the variation in shear stress and velocity profile: (i) just before the slurry starts to move (ii) as the slurry flows when the pressure gradient is double that in part (i)

To save energy, the air supply to a 2000 ft office has been shut off overnight and the room temperature has dropped to 40°f. in the morning, the thermostat is reset to 70°f and warm air at 120 f begins to flov in at 200ft'/min. the air is well mixed within the room, and an equal mass flow of air at room temperature (changing with time) is withdrawn through a return duct. the air pressure is nearly 1 atm everywhere. ignoring heat transfer with the surroundings and kinetic and potential energy effects, estimate how long it takes for the room temperature to reach 70°f. plot the room temperature as a function of time.

Avertical steel rod of length 2.0 m and diameter 25 mm is rigidly fixed at its upper end and has a flange at its lower, free, end. what will be the maximum stress produced in the rod when a load of 20 kn is applied, (a) gradually to the lower end, (b) suddenly to the lower end, (c) by a collar falling from a height of 50 mm on to the flange?
