This circuit is very much like an adder circuit. Remember the adder has a 'half adder' in the LSB position, and 'full adders' in all the other bitslices. This is because the LSB only has the A and B inputs, it does not have a carry in. Each bitslice computes a carry output, which goes to the carry input of the next bitslice, and also computes the output bit for that slice.
