(30 points) When a cubic, solid-solution ternary ABC alloy containing mainly A is heated at low temperatures, fine particles rich in either B or C form in A. The B particles form on the {110} planes as circular plates (disks), 1 nm thick and 40 nm in diameter. The C particles form as rods (cylinders) along the <100> directions, 2 nm in diameter and 30 nm long. (a) Sketch pictures of the two types of particles using the same scale to show their relative dimensions, and indicate the dimensions on the particles. (b) Sketch the shape-factor intensity distributions (rel-rods) from both particles about a common diffraction spot. You may use whatever scale is convenient to show the intensity distributions, but indicate this scale (in nm-1 ) and draw the intensities as accurately as possible correctly oriented along an orthogonal set of axes labeled [100], [010] and [001]. You might want to sketch a <100> perspective as well as a three-dimensional perspective for clarity, but the <100> drawing is optional. (c) How far away from the center of the diffraction spot are the first minima in the intensity distributions for the two particles (give your answer in nm-1 )

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.

Amixture of slurry and mud is to be pumped through a horizontal pipe of diameter 500 mm. the fluid behaves as a bingham plastic with a yield stress of 30 pa and viscosity 0.04 pa.s. describe the effects of the shear stress through a transverse section of the pipe by plotting the variation in shear stress and velocity profile: (i) just before the slurry starts to move (ii) as the slurry flows when the pressure gradient is double that in part (i)
