The initial temperature of a steel rod is 900oC and it is dropped into rapidly agitated oil at 315oC to quench it to martensite. Assume this follows first order system behavior. The temperature in the center of the rod is 500oC after 55 seconds. What is the thermal time constant of this cylinder and how long will it take to get to 320 oC?

Amass of 1.5 kg of air at 120 kpa and 24°c is contained in a gas-tight, frictionless piston-cylinder device. the air is now compressed to a final pressure of 720 kpa. during the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. calculate the boundary work input during this process.
