A single-line steel riser-pipeline system of OD = 7-in is designed for operating pressure of 3000 psig to transport oil (oil = 55 lb/ft3) from a subsea well (at 5000-ft water depth) to a buoyed turret connected to it. It is required to design turret buoyancy tanks volume such that it is 1000-ft below water level when not attached to a vessel. Given the following information: • Seawater density (water = 64 lb/ft3) • Steel density (s = 490 lb/ft3), steel yield strength (65 ksi) • Pipe design SF = 0.6 • Pipe design criteria a = P*D/2*t, where P is pressure, D ≈ OD, t is wall thickness, a is allowable stress. • Weight of turret and its mooring system Wt ≈ 5000 lb. • Buoyancy force Fb = Volume * water. • Free hanging catenary length ≈ 1.3* water depth • ID = OD-2*t Determine: a) The minimum buoyancy volume required for the turret. b) The required winch tension to bring turret to sea surface while attached to riser-pipeline system.

Apump is used to circulate hot water in a home heating system. water enters the well-insulated pump operating at steady state at a rate of 0.42 gal/min. the inlet pressure and temperature are 14.7 lbf/in.2, and 180°f, respectively; at the exit the pressure is 60 lbf/in.2 the pump requires 1/15 hp of power input. water can be modeled as an incompressible substance with constant density of 60.58 lb/ft3 and constant specific heat of 1 btu/lb or. neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects, determine the temperature change, in °r, as the water flows through the pump.

On solidification from a melt, the polymer polyethylene forms a semi-crystalline spherulite structure. (i) sketch an individual spherulite and label the amorphous and crystalline regions. (ii) draw a schematic to show the changes in specific volume with temperature during cooling from the melt, comparing it to the theoretical extremes of fully crystalline and fully amorphous (indicate tm and tg)
