In order to harden a 3.09 cm diameter and 1.39 m long connecting rod made of carbon
steel AISI 1010 (p = 7921 kg/m", Cp = 464
J/kg·K, and k = 65.5 W/m·K), the rod is
submerged in an oil bath where the
temperature of the oil is maintained at 1295
°C (h = 664 W/m²Â.K). The rod is initially at a
uniform temperature of 32 °C. The rod is
considered to be hardened completely if the
minimum temperature of the rod reaches to
829 °C.
(b) If 5000 rods are to be hardened in one day,
calculate the amount of heat to be supplied to
the oil bath to maintain the temperature of
the oil at 1200 °C.
