A line shaft is to transmit 30kW at 160rpm. It is driven by a motor placed directly under it by means of a belt running on a 1m diameter pulley keyed to the end of the shaft. The tension on the tight side of the belt is 2.5 times that on the slack side and the center of the pulley overhangs 150mm beyond the center line of the end bearing. The allowable shear stress is 56MPa and the mass of the pulley is 160kg. Determine the diameter of the shaft.
