The MSP430 is a small, 16-bit microcontroller. The device's forte is that it is capable of remarkably low power operation. It is not a processor suited to computationally heavy applications. It is a fixed point (i. e. integer) processor. That means the CPU contains a digital circuit called the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) which performs addition and subtraction and the logic operations AND, OR, NOT and XOR on integers.
