A distillation column is a process unit that separates components based on their volatility. In the simplest columns, mixtures of components are fed to the column and two streams leave the column, a top stream that is rich in the more volatile component, and a bottom stream that is lean in the more volatile component. A liquid mixture containing 60.0% benzene and 40.0% toluene by moles is fed to a distillation column operated at steady state. The concentration in the top stream is 95 mole% benzene, and a bottom product stream contains 16% of the moles benzene fed to the column. Required:
a. Draw and fully label a flow chart for this process (include all knowns and unknowns).
b. Perform a degree of freedom analysis (do not include information given in part c of this problem).
c. If an inlet flow rate of 200 mol/h is used in the process, then determine the ratio of the molar flow rates of the two exiting streams (top stream/bottom stream).
