Located near the bottom of an insulated cylinder is a rigid plate of negligible mass. Between the rigid plate and the bottom of the cylinder is 0.4 kg (ma) of air at 250 kPa (Pa1) and 300 K (Ta1). Between the rigid plate and a semi-constrained piston 0.5 kg (mw) exists superheated water vapor at 300 Celsius (Tw1) and 100 kPa (Pw1). Consider these to be the initial conditions (state 1) of this multi-component system, before any energy conducts between the two substances. The system boundary includes the air, the water and the rigid plate. The rigid plate is conductive allowing heat to pass between the air and water vapor, but the piston is well insulated. The water vapor is manually compressed until the volume of water vapor (Vw2) is halved and the pressure is 200 kPa (Pw2), at which point the air and water vapor are in temperature equilibrium. Determine the following:
a. The final temperature of the water vapor, T2, in Celsius (no subscripted needed here...)
b. The final pressure of the air, Pa2, in kPa
c. The change in entropy of the air, Sa2-Sa1, in kJ/K
d. The change in entropy of the water, Sw2-Sw1, in kJ/K
e. The change in entropy of the combined system, S2-S1, in kJ/K, neglecting the mass of the rigid plate
f. The entropy produced, σ, of the combined system during the process

Along 8-cm diameter steam pipe whose external surface temperature is 900c connects two buildings. the pipe is exposed to ambient air at 70c with a wind speed of 50 km/hr blowing across the pipe. determine the heat loss from the pipe per unit length. (b) air at 500c enters a section of a rectangular duct (15 cm x 20 cm) at an average velocity of 7 m/s. if the walls of the duct are maintained at 100c. a) the length of the tube for an exit temperature of the air to be 40 0c. b)the rate of heat transfer from the air. c) the fan power needed to overcome the pressure drop in this section of the duct.
