A bankrupt chemical firm has been taken over by new management. On the property they found a 10,000 m3 brine pond containing 35 mg/L of organic matter. The new owners propose to flush the pond into their discharge pipe leading to a nearby treatment plant. During the flush, the decay of the organic matter follows first-order reaction kinetics with a rate constant k of 0.1 d-1. Assuming the system is completely mixed but is under non-steady state conditions, what flow rate of freshwater (in m3/h) must they use to reduce the organic matter concentration in the pond to 0.5 mg/L in 30 d?
