Based on your reading of the following passage, which of these responses concerning the proposed Keystone Pipeline is most valid? Historically, government subsidies for and regulation of transportation have been built into American culture. The creation and expansion of our national network of highways is an example of this. States and the nation as a whole are responsible for maintaining highways and also earn income from them via taxation and regulation of fuel and fuel-related activities. Furthermore, discouraging dependence on fossil fuels is more common in Europe than it is in America for cultural reasons.

The historical reliance on government subsidies of transportation will inevitably justify the taking of land for pipeline use and the resulting payouts to property owners.
The need to earn income through taxation and regulation of fuel and fuel-related activities should trump environmental concerns about the pipeline.
To reject the pipeline is anti-capitalist.
There is sound historical precedent for subsidization of the pipeline.
