Figurative language is language that refers to something but does not really mean what it says. For example, “It’s raining cats and dogs,” is an example of figurative language. It refers to it raining really hard, but it isn’t REALLY raining cats and dogs. There are many other types of figurative language as well. Similes are comparisons of two things. For example, Jimmy is as funny as a clown, is comparing Jimmy to a clown. Literal language really means what it says. It’s raining a lot outside is an example of literal language.
