King Dasharatha began to feel tired of reigning, and decided to make Rama, his firstborn and heir, as successor. Its people received the announcement of its intention with charm, and the whole city was in the middle of the most splendid preparations for the ceremony. Dasharatha went to discuss the celebrations with his favorite wife, Kaikeyi. However, Kaikeyi's envy was aroused because the son of another king's wife, not his son, Bharata, would become king.

Kaikeyi recalled that, years ago, the ancient king had guaranteed two benefits. This was the result of a war in which the king was before his children were born. He was riding in a carriage when the wheel was about to fall. Queen Kaikeyi was with him, and sacrificed her finger, putting him in the wheel to hold her in place, thus saving the life of her husband. To show his gratitude, he offered her 2 wishes / benefits. Dasharatha was hurt, but he had to keep his promise. Rama, the obedient son, immediately agreed to relinquish his claim to the throne and set out for his exile.
