the villagers feel like the lottery is important, but they maybe do not care so much. take note of how the box is battered up and how the tradition is not very celebrated. there probably used to be a lot of celebrations. but the importance is reflected in old man warner's attitude because he cites that the other villages will go crazy if they do not do lotter. therefore, lottery is important but they dont care thjat much about doing it
