That makes what the daughter asks that much more penetrating for him. It can be C. I don't think your instincts are wrong, and I'm eliminating it almost on grammar. It still bugs me that C implies her question was deliberate and there was something unchildlike about it. If you have really strong feelings about it, go with C.
