In organising the events of odysseus’s quest, why would the text in the odyssey- elpenor be labelled as part of the road of trails?

Elpenor was one of Odysseus' comrades, and happened to be the youngest. This was labelled as part of the road of trials for that fact he had to mourn about this, thinking this was his fault. He had to overcome this.

i don't really know the circumstances. i personally think not due to it not being fair for all parties and how hated i'd become if i thought it was a good thing.
