The poet infers that the sailors on the ship probably saw 'something amazing' i.e. a man falling from the sky. Nevertheless, they did absolutely nothing, they did not try to help but continued to sail calmly as they had probably something more important to do. Auden uses the image of the ship which sails calmly without paying attention to this dramatic fact, to pinpoint the indifference of the people.
