How does davis describe the relationship between growing up in newark and returning to the city as a physician?

Sampson Davis describes his childhood growing up in Newark as rough, and it was difficult to find inspiration while being surrounded by so much negative influence. In contrast, he felt that he had to be the positive influence he needed as a young boy. He had the moral obligation to improve the area in which he grew up in.
