The story itself revolves around Sanger Rainsford, a big-game hunter who, after falling overboard from a yacht and swimming to the nearby isolated island in the Caribbean, falls into the hands of a Russian aristocrat Zaroff and becomes "the hunted". This excerpt describes the moment Rainsford first saw Zaroff's castle on the seemingly uninhabited island.
