By writing about his brother, Theodore is attempting to portray how he influenced his writings, how his personality is since he was described as a devoted and compassionate person. Paul was always willing to help anybody.

Dreiser may have written this piece to pay homage to the memory of his older brother, who, based on the story, helped him out when he was in need and seemed to be his closest confidante in his family.
