last week, a teacher union gathered outside of central middle school to protest low teacher pay, poor working conditions, minimal teacher support and high pressure demands and expectations in the work place. approximately one hundred forty-eight teachers from three different school districts have been on strike for nine straight school days, and are refusing to return to work until the governing board approves a pay increase for the coming school year.

when asked about the strike, mrs. jane kroff, a ninth grade science teacher, explained: "it's not that we don't love our job. we wouldn't teach if we didn't. but most of us have had to take on second jobs just to pay the bills." mr. todd riley, a colleague of mrs. kroff and twenty-year veteran teacher added, "we don't want to have to leave our profession behind just to make ends meet. some of us have master's degrees, doctorates even, yet we still don't make enough to pay off our student loans. it's time the government started looking out for its employees."
