how do they to both teach and support each other, and how do they fail? think about

what each group is trying to protect and when it withholds something from the other.

No Witchcraft For Sale begings after a white baby is born, Gideon wants him to be like a son to him however he knows that their racial differences will set them apart as he grows older and less innocent. In this story Gideon's older son hurts the baby and the father uses witchcraft to cure him. Throughout the story the black people are trying to protect their culture/practices while white people are attempting to figure out how was the baby healed.

In The Moment Before the Gun Went Off is a biased police report-like story in which both white and racial stereotypes are used about the apartide. Van de Vyver accidentally shoots his half black son dead, and black people use this for their anti apartheid movements claiming he was cruel, whereas white people claim he shouldn't feel any remorse whatsoever.

In The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses talks about a group of political prisoners who get a new warder, fighting a psychological battle with him, one day Brille catches him stealing fertilizer for his farm and exchanges tobacco for his silence, yet still gets him in trouble. The warder is easier so they help each other out by exchanging fertilizers with tobacco. Both white and black characters are protecting each other's secrets.

At the beginning of all the stories white people see black people as inferior and black people look suspiciously on the whites. The lack of confidence from the black comes from a long history of discrimination.The same happens with the ideas the white have about the inadequacy of the black people.

With the development of the characters and events in the stories we learn that the white do have something to learn from the the black communities.Meanwhile, the black people are able to see that there are exceptions, that white does not mean bad and judicious.

Each group is trying to protect several things.To begin with, they want to protect their traditions and their history.Second, their main interest is their young and the future that awaits them.Finally, it is their lives that they are preserving.Both groups are in favour of preserving the essence of their existances, and most probably being able to share a location without having to resort to violence.In other words, in the very end , both groups really want to protect a state of peace.
