We see this when he says, "you don't stop this soon, those boys are going to kill you." These details show that he is insistent and keeps on Paul to do something. His father is not unsure, careless, or indifferent. He cares about Paul and doesn't want him to get beat up, but he also knows that Paul needs to handle the situation himself.
