What is the affect of the first person point of view

The first-person narrator gives insight into an enslaved person's thoughts and feelings because, by means of the pronoun 'I', the excerpt conveys the experiences of this person from his unique point of view. The narrator is able to convey his emotions and experiences by writing in the first-person.
