In the novel, for example, the Cowardly Lion thinks he lacks courage, but the omniscient narrator tells us of an incident that shows that he has in fact what he thinks he lacks. When the characters come across a great ditch, the Cowardly Lion, who hypothetically lacks in courage, courageously carries the others one-by-one on his back to the other side, which shows that the narrator knows more about Cowardly Lion’s traits than Lion himself.
