When presenting a thesis statement for a typical five-paragraph essay, you should include your position on the matter and follow that up with at least three points/supporting details.  As a thesis statement is like a roadmap, the points/details will tell readers the topic of the body paragraphs that will follow in the order they will be presented.  For instance, let’s look at the following thesis statement that includes this list:

Cats are better pets than dogs because they don’t need to be taken on walks, they can bathe themselves, and they don’t eat much.

You can see that the first body paragraph will be about walks.  The second body paragraph would be about cleaning habits.  And, the third body paragraph would be about consumption amount.   Thus, you can see how a list of supporting details is actually needed in order for the thesis statement to be a roadmap for readers.
