Question: What was Berthine role in the story The Prisoner?

"The Prisoners" was published in the 1880's and it was written by Guy De Maupassant.  Berthine is one of the characters in this story and she is described as tall, slender, strong, brave and a true girl of the woods. In the story, she plays the role of a daughter and a wife of a forester who is alone at home with her mother while her father is in town drilling with the local militia and her husband is serving the French Army. She is seen as an example of patriotism, courage, and intelligence.
