(1) two minnesota brothers, ed and norman, are engaged in a war. (2) it all started after ed’s wife gave him a pair of pants that didn’t fit. (3) ed wrapped up the pants and put them under norman’s christmas tree. (4) as soon as norman opened the box, he recognized the unwanted pants. (5) the next year, he gave them back to ed, sealed in a heavy carton tied with knotted ropes. (6) the war of the pants was on. (7) each year, on one of the brothers’ birthdays, or on christmas, the dreaded pants reappear. (8) two years ago, norman bought an old safe, put the pants in it, welded it shut, and delivered it to ed’s house. (9) somehow, ed retrieved the pants. (10) ( one of the rules of the war is that the pants must not be damaged) (11) last year ed took the pants to an auto junkyard. (12) the pants were placed in an ancient ford’s backseat, and the car then went through the auto crusher. (13) on his birthday, norman found a four-foot square of smashed metal on his doorstep. (14) he knew it could only be ed’s doing and the pants must be inside. (15) norman is still trying to get at the pants and prepare next year’s “topper.”

Read the excerpt from "the most dangerous game." again rainsford lifted the heavy knocker, and let it fall. the door opened then, opened as suddenly as if it were on a spring, and rainsford stood blinking in the river of glaring gold light that poured out. the first thing rainsford's eyes discerned was the largest man rainsford had ever seen—a gigantic creature, solidly made and black bearded to the waist. in his hand the man held a long-barreled revolver, and he was pointing it straight at rainsford's heart. the details of this excerpt show that rainsford sees ivan as a(n) individual.
