life for escaped slaves using the underground railroad was often dangerous and strenuous. many of the slaves who escaped and traveled to canada or safer northern states were young men who could better handle the difficult journey. also, the trip was more difficult for slaves who lived in the deep south, as they had further to travel. some of escaped slaves had guides, called conductors, who led them to safe houses. at the safe houses, called stations, many escaped slaves could find food and a warm place to sleep. when they did not stay in stations, however, escaped slaves had to find their own food and shelter.
