I actually think the thesis was not found in the main pargagraphs but formed in latter paragraphs, such as the last "could it be that the homeless, like tgise anncients, are reminding us of our common humanity"? This is the main theory of the essay and the purpose of the essay is  the reasons for compassion and she kind of questions her own theory of why people are compassionate towards others. It is really to help and care, our to satisfy there own selfish ways.
