Arachne is a myth about pride. Pride was her downfall because she listened to the praise of others and let it blind her, so eventually when Athena came, Arachne was sure she could win Athena in the contest because of her pride. (She told them that Athene herself could not weave cloth more beautiful than her own.) Because of her pride she thought she could beat Athena, not only that but her pride lead her to create a picture that insulted the Greek Gods, causing an attempt to take her life, which Athena prevented, and cursed Arachne and her descendants to forever weave tapestries, creating the first spider. (“Live on, wicked girl,” she said. “Live on and spin, both you and your descendants. When men look at you they may remember that it is not wise to strive with Athene.")
