people across the united states smoke nicotine every single day. they inhale this drug through various products offered, such as cigarettes or cigars. the nicotine from the smoke reaches their brain in only ten seconds. nicotine is what makes this drug so addicting to the user. however, this "euphoric feeling" has a high price to pay, and in most cases, it's not just the user of the drug that suffers the consequences.
you see if one-person smokes, the whole building smokes, regardless of whether they are the one holding the cigarette or even in the same apartment. in a multifamily building, the families with nonsmokers are affected just as much as the ones that have smokers in them. this puts those people at risk for so many things. children and adults alike are then at risk for a list of chronic and fatal diseases. now that you now it can causes cancer; would you give your loved one's cancer just for a short moment of euphoria?
have you ever considered just what exactly is even in cigarette smoke? if not, you really should stop to think about it. over 4000 chemical compounds are found in cigarette smoke. the epa classified 43 of those chemicals as carcinogens. many of the substances in the smoke are poisonous to the human body. for example, carbon monoxide can be found in cigarette smoke, and yet we have carbon monoxide detectors in our homes to keep us safe from this deadly chemical. a high amount of tar is also found in cigarette smoke.
yes, you read that correctly, tar, the substance used to pave roads. if that doesn't open your eyes, then this next fact will. lots of the chemicals found in cigarette smoke are the same ones found in rat poison and car exhaust. now i'd like to stress how this is ruining the future. children are the next generation, and they are the ones who will someday run this country, and yet we have people in society who smoke around these children and elders every single day with no consequence. everyone is susceptible to problems caused by smoking, but infants are more vulnerable. secondhand smoke sends 7,500 to 15,000 infants to the hospital every year for respiratory issues that could have easily been avoided. those children exposed to the smoke, and everyone else as well, are then that much more likely to develop asthma and other respiratory problems in their lifetime. those children could die from the diseases they obtained from the smoke that they were forced to inhale.
so next time you go to smoke a cigarette or see someone smoking remembers this; by smoking or letting them smoke that cigarette around you put yourself and others at considerable risk for a potentially life-threatening disease. if you can't build up the courage based on that, then do it for others, for the future, for the fact that you could be saving lives by not smoking the cigarette or telling the person who is to put it out. as a society, we have the power to stamp out the effects of secondhand smoke. would you stand by and watch someone slowly kill everyone they love while simultaneously hurting himself? if you do nothing about it, then you're a part of the problem. you can eliminate tobacco use, so they don't rely on it and choose to push it as far away from your life as you can, better yet don't start at all.

Read the quote from zimmermann in the code book. a future government could inherit a technology infrastructure that's optimized for surveillance, where they can watch the movements of their political opposition, every financial transaction, every communication, every bit of e-mail, every phone call. everything could be filtered and scanned and automatically recognized by voice recognition technology and transcribed. it's time for cryptography to step out of the shadows of spies and the military, and step into the sunshine and be embraced by the rest of us. which question does this paragraph answer? why does zimmermann think encryption is important? what kind of encryption did zimmermann invent? how does zimmermann’s encryption work? who made encryption based on zimmermann’s work?
