edmond dantès is a young, handsome, and talented man. after returning home from a long voyage, he's set to become captain of a ship and also marry his beautiful fiancée, mercédès.

dantès’s perfect life causes three men, danglars, fernand, and caderousse, to feel extremely jealous. they conspire to get dantès jailed for a crime he didn't realize he had committed. their scheme succeeds when villefort, the assistant crown prosecutor, realizes he can further his career by playing along. dantès is left to rot in jail.
