In this task, you’ll write a historical fiction short story (between 600 and 800 words). choose any historical personality, but don’t pick the same person that you may have used in any previous lessons. because this character will be such an integral part of your story, make sure it is someone who interests you. think of someone that you have recently learned about in class, or consider someone whose background and history intrigues you.
follow these instructions as you write your story.
conducting research
first, consult at least three credible library sources and three internet sources while researching the biography of the selected individual. consulting a wide variety of sources will you get different perspectives and gain deeper insight into the character you'll be writing about. you will want to accurately depict your figure’s appearance, personality, and background. the research you do will ground your character in historical facts.
creating the story
second, you can be creative with the other details in the story, such as the setting, the scenario, and the people with whom your chosen character interacts. these elements do not have to be based on reality. as you write and develop the plot of the story, look to follow the basic plot structure.
incorporating narrative techniques
next, incorporate appropriate narrative techniques into your writing such as plot, setting, characters, and point of view to give your story artistic appeal. enhance the style of your story by taking into account the different elements of diction, language, dialogue, and figurative language.
revising the story
then, revise your story to ensure it reads smoothly. focus on using parallel structure in sentences. you can use parallel structure when providing a list or drawing a comparison. you can also use parallel structure to show that two or more ideas in a sentence have the same level of importance at the word, phrase, or clause level. parallel structure is formed by using coordinating conjunctions such as and or. for example, "revising, editing, and proofreading the final draft of your essay are important steps." in this sentence, “revising,” “editing,” and “proofreading” are at the same word-level because they are all gerunds that are joined by the coordinating conjunction and.
