“just like velvet, the fur of the little brown pup was so soft to the touch
the other, the spotted one had fur more like wire, brittle seeming
two little pups on my doorstep that sunday
it was june, the temperature was well into the triple digits, the sun was scorching
i was 10, what did i know about taking care of a dog? two at that
they were both little ladies, mutts. their breeds were unidentifiable but you could tell they were going to be big..
i begged papa to let me keep them, i was in love.
he told me they were mine, but outside they must sleep. i understood.
days, weeks, months on end we played, never thinking it would ever end
the 3 of us grew together, they taught me how to love and care
my girls i would call them, my girls and i it was
we ran, played, cuddled,
life was happy
until carlie, with fur like wire and spots for days, became ill
the vets told us she’d be lucky to have weeks to live
as time flew by she came inside, she slept with me
her illness, like cancer but not quite was taking over her body day by day. the weight loss was extreme
her puppy days were over, roxie, the velvet coated pup and i knew..
we loved and loved until her last day, i held her in my arms, whispered goodbye
only 18 months old, a baby still growing
weeks turned into years without carlie
life wasn’t the same
who would’ve thought such a short time together could’ve left such broken souls
times are better but will never be the same
to carlie i love you
to carlie i pray.”
