Asound solution

no matter how often mikel travels, be it for vacation, extracurricular activities, or just to stay at a friend's house in the next town, he tries to make sure to get at least seven hours of sleep
however, mikel has been having trouble falling asleep and it's interfering with his fun. at first, his bouts of insomnia only caused minimal interruptions to his daily travels. he caught himself napping on the bus on the way to a soccer tournament with his team and almost missed getting off the bus for warm-ups. however, his lack of sleep soon began to make enjoyable activities hard. when he went to spend the night at roman's house to watch a new movie they were both excited to watch, he fell asleep before roman had even hit "play" on the remote control.
when he came home the next day, his dad pulled him aside and offered some advice, "mikel, have you tried counting sheep at bedtime? "
"yes," replied mikel, exhausted. "but my mind wanders to school work and soccer practice."
"what about chamomile tea or hot milk? "
"yes, but i end up waking in the middle of night wanting something else to drink."
"have you tried a sound machine? "
"no, but i usually prefer quiet when i'm sleeping. but at this point, i'll try anything."
mikel and his father went to the nearby electronics store and picked out a sound machine that had multiple settings. his father told him it may take him a few nights to find a setting and sound that he liked. mikel just wanted to get back on a normal sleep schedule and was willing to give the sound machine a chance.
it did take some time. mikel did not like the machine during the first night; having to adjust to any sound was difficult, and his already restless sleep cycle was being further distressed. however, by the third night, he had found a sound he liked—crickets chirping—and by the fifth night, he was once again sleeping with regularity.
weeks passed, and a well-rested mikel had forgotten all about his battle with sleeplessness. he was even feeling more rested to the sound machine, and his play with the traveling soccer team was improving. his coach and team had taken notice, naming him as a starter for the team's upcoming tournament.
as mikel was packing for the trip, he accidentally knocked his sound machine onto the hardwood floor of his bedroom. he scrambled to pick it up and get it plugged in to make sure it was still working. unfortunately, all that came out was muffled and rattling noises from the broken machine. with the team bus coming to pick him up in less than 30 minutes, he didn't have time to get a new one before leaving for the tournament.
mikel struggled to fall asleep that evening, between the excitement of getting to be a starter for the first time and the absence of his noise machine. it didn't that many of his teammates snored. roman noticed his friend was struggling to fall asleep and came up with an idea. "come with me," he whispered from the next bed, "and bring your sleeping bag."
the friends took a quarter-mile walk, finding a patch of cool grass, before roman suddenly stopped. he unfurled his sleeping bag and looked at mikel, "this is the spot."
"what are we doing? " asked mikel.
"just lay down and listen," instructed roman. so the friends laid in their sleeping bags, but just as he was about to ask roman what they were waiting for, mikel noticed the nighttime chirps of crickets. a smile came to mikel's face and before roman could even speak again, mikel had fallen soundly asleep.
