Explanation:

On the way home Odysseus must pass the place of the Sirens. He ordered his ship crew to plug their ears with wax, so he will not hear Siren's singing. Odysseus himself prefers to be tied to the mast and does not want to have his ears clogged because he is curious about the singing of the sirens.  

When he heard the melodious sound of the Sirens, he rebelled and ordered the ship crew to wake up to release the rope that bound him. The crew of course refused. When their ship is far from the Sirens and Odysseus becomes calmer, he is then released from his bounds.
