The story "The Necklace" takes place in France, especifically in Paris. Moreover, the story is set in the mid nineteenth century. The context of the story is mainly set within the high classes of French society, to which Madame Loisel desperately wants to belong. This is a context in which appearances and riches are highly valued, and this is one of the reasons why Madame Loisel is so disappointed at her low class existence.
