On page 166, hester imagines all of the ways that nature may express its displeasure with roger chillingworth. jot down a few of the scenes she imagines. pay close attention to her mention of sunshine…do you notice any connections? on page 167, hester reminisces about her marriage to chillingworth. what does she say is her worst crime? how does she see chillingworth’s crime as even worse than hers? hawthorne writes, "let men tremble to win the hand of woman, unless they win along with it the utmost passion of her heart! else it may be their miserable fortune, as it was roger chillingworth’s, when some mightier touch than their own may have awakened all her sensibilities…" what is hawthorne saying about love and marriage? do you agree? we come back to pearl, playing in and torturing nature. why do you think she does all of these terrible things when she is described as "wild as the sea-breeze" (168)? what connection does pearl make between hester and dimmesdale? how do you think she came to this conclusion? on pages 170-171, hester feels conflicted….on the one hand she thinks that maybe she should share the truth of the scarlet letter with pearl, but then she refuses to do so. revist her argument for each side; do you agree with her decision to not tell pearl?
