The statement is correct. In the Victorian era, everything was about where you stood in society, and the only way to keep your place in society was to follow multiple social rules. In the novel, Dr. Jekyll is a renowned scientist, however, because of the era, he feels as though the only way to live was to suppress his dark urges. Mr. Hyde was the representation of those dark emotions and urges that tend to get suppressed, he was the man that society would turn away for his behavior.  But for when Dr. Jekyll was afraid of being rejected by society, Mr. Hyde did not care. This would however be their demises as this would causes the split personality.
